How to Completely Uninstall Programs in Windows (No Leftovers)
Why normal uninstalls leave junk
Many programs leave behind config folders in AppData, registry keys, services and scheduled tasks. Over years this "digital dust" slows the PC and causes conflicts. Here's how to remove programs properly.
Step 1: Standard uninstall
- Settings β Apps β Installed apps.
- Find the program, click β― β Uninstall.
- Follow the program's own uninstaller (say "no" to keeping settings when asked).
Step 2: Remove leftover folders
After uninstalling, check these locations and delete any folders named after the program:
C:\Program Files
C:\Program Files (x86)
C:\ProgramData
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming
Press Win+R and paste %appdata% / %localappdata% to jump there quickly.
Step 3: Clean the registry (carefully)
Open regedit and search (Ctrl+F) the program's name under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE. Delete matching keys. Only delete keys clearly named after the program.
Step 4: The easy way β Revo Uninstaller
Revo (free version, in our Download Center) runs the built-in uninstaller, then scans for leftover files and registry entries and removes them automatically with a safe backup first. This replaces steps 2β3 in one click.
Step 5: Remove stubborn programs
- Program won't uninstall because it's running? Check Task Manager and end its processes, then retry.
- Built-in Windows apps (like Xbox, Mail): remove with PowerShell:
Get-AppxPackage *xbox* | Remove-AppxPackage. - Programs that "reinstall themselves" are usually malware β see our malware removal guide.
