Is the screen really dead?

First confirm it's the panel and not the cable/GPU: connect an external monitor. If the external display works, the problem is the screen or its cable. Also try gently flexing the lid — if the image flickers, it's usually the cable.

Step 1: Order the right panel

  1. Open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display for resolution/refresh.
  2. Remove the old panel (or find its exact model via a tool like HWiNFO) and order by that model number — or search your laptop model + "LCD panel".
  3. Match: size, resolution, connector type (30-pin vs 40-pin), mounting tabs, and surface (matte/glossy).
  4. Watch for "compatible" vs "genuine" panels — genuine is safer for color and brightness.

Step 2: Prepare your workspace

  • Anti-static surface, good lighting, a magnetic tray for screws.
  • Power off, unplug, remove the battery (internal too, if accessible).
  • Take photos at every step — your future self will thank you.

Step 3: Remove the bezel

  1. Pry the bezel off with a plastic spudger/guitar pick — start at a corner.
  2. Unscrew the LCD panel (4–6 screws in the corners).
  3. Lay the panel flat on the keyboard, peel the tape off the connector, and release the cable latch.

Step 4: Fit the new panel

  1. Connect the cable fully and lock the latch, then secure with tape.
  2. Screw the panel in loosely first, align, then tighten evenly.
  3. Power on and test before snapping the bezel back on.
  4. Snap the bezel back carefully and reinstall the battery.
Warning: Touchscreen and OLED panels have extra layers (digitizer, glass bonding) that make DIY replacement much harder. For those, and for MacBooks, professional repair is strongly recommended.

Calibrate and test

After replacement: check for dead pixels (full-screen color tests), set brightness, and run the display at its native resolution. Update the graphics driver if brightness controls misbehave.

Tip: Total typical cost: $60–150 for the panel + 30–60 minutes of work. Repair shops charge $150–350 — DIY saves real money if you're careful.
