How to Speed Up Your Internet Connection: 12 Tips That Work
Measure first, fix second
- Run a speed test at speedtest.net on a device connected by ethernet cable β WiFi tests don't measure your real connection.
- Compare with the plan you pay for. Getting close to plan speed on cable? The problem is your WiFi or device. Getting far less on cable? It's the router, modem or ISP.
1. Restart your modem and router
Unplug both for 60 seconds, power on the modem first, wait for sync, then the router. This fixes a huge share of slow-internet complaints (stale sessions, memory leaks).
2. Check for background downloads
Windows updates, Steam, cloud sync (OneDrive/Dropbox/Google Drive) and torrents can saturate your connection. Check Task Manager β Performance and each cloud app's status.
3. Use ethernet where it matters
Gaming, video calls and large downloads deserve a cable β WiFi adds latency and cuts throughput. Powerline adapters are a decent no-cabling compromise.
4. Fix your WiFi
See our slow WiFi guide: 5 GHz band, channel selection, router position, mesh upgrades.
5. Update router firmware
Log into the router admin and check for updates β vendors ship performance and security fixes regularly.
6. Check your plan and equipment
- Is your router from 2015? Modern WiFi 6 routers handle congestion dramatically better.
- Modem not supporting DOCSIS 3.1 (cable)? You may be leaving speed on the table.
- If the whole household streams in 4K, 100 Mbps may simply not be enough β consider upgrading your plan.
7. Scan for malware
Botnets turn PCs into traffic-pumping zombies. Run the scans from our malware guide.
8. Change DNS servers
Slow DNS makes everything feel slow even with fast throughput. Try 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google) in your router or per-device.
9. Talk to your ISP
Line faults, neighborhood congestion and outdated modems are their side of the fence. Ask them to test the line remotely β and push for a technician if issues persist.
